25 Nov Getting started in Turku
Hi my name is Svenja! I am 23 years old and I live in Bremen in northern Germany. In August 2020 I started my semester abroad at Turku AMK in the department of Mechanical Engineering. I have to admit, getting started in a new city, in a new country, can be exciting, overwhelming and chaotic. At least for me, this is exactly how it was – and I think that is totally okay.
Before boarding the plane from Frankfurt to Helsinki I was able to organize to rent a furnished room in the student apartments. Without knowing anything but the address I shouldered my heavy backpack and started my 4 months journey to Finland.
After a long day of traveling by plane, train and car I arrived in my new northern home. Luckily my student tutors from the university were prepared to hand me my apartment key and the starting package I reserved in advance. That way I was able to start my day in Finland with a blanket, a pillow and kitchen utensils for a lovely breakfast.
For my studies abroad I wanted to live as cheap and as sustainable as possible. My backpack did not have too much space to bring additional things back home. For this purpose, I love the concept of borrowing!
